Good Employees Equal Great Business
Good employees help a company thrive but finding those employees requires time and specialized skills. Brad Roach, President of Trans-Tech, never felt comfortable with advertising, interviewing, checking references - all the components of recruitment.
"The more I read about what you could or couldn't ask, or how to determine the best candidate for the job, the more I knew I doubted my skills." So Brad asked Pauline Mathews to handle the job. "Since Pauline took over recruiting, we've had a better response to our ads and better qualified candidates. It's amazing to me the information she finds out in an interview."
Trans-Tech rebuilds automobile transmissions and transfer cases. The work requires skill, care and a commitment to quality.
Pauline uses several tools to help attract, identify and retain the best employees, beginning with the right advertisement and including a predictive index. "I build a predictive index by interviewing current employees," Pauline explains. "I'm looking for the characteristics of employees who are already happy and successful in the job. When I find an applicant with those same characteristics, I know I've found someone who'll become a long-term productive employee."
The best interviews serve the candidate's interest as well as the employer's. Brad has found that "when Pauline interviews candidates, they know exactly what they're applying for and what's expected of them." That raises the chances for success and makes Trans-Tech a better place to work for everyone.
There's one more aspect to keeping good employees: keeping them safe on the job. The rules set up by OSHA and other government agencies are intended to improve safety, reduce workplace hazards and educate employees.
"When we see a problem, we take care of it," Brad states. "But sometimes we don't even know we have a problem. Pauline knows what needs to be done."
While Brad's chief concern is the welfare of his employees, he also wants to keep Trans-Tech compliant with government regulations, avoiding fines and penalties. "The chances of some agency coming in to review us increase every year and especially as we grow. Pauline has made us compliant and she keeps us there. I don't have to worry. I've learned so much from her."
